Winter carnival

Posted in photography at 3:33 pm by carriebee

This weekend we went to the St. Paul Winter Carnival with some friends. We took a quick look at the ice and snow sculptures on Sunday. We may have spent longer there if it wasn’t so frigid. Here’s one of my favorite sculptures:

Unfortunately many of the ice sculptures were a bit melted from the warm temperatures on Friday, but all of the snow sculptures were in good condition. We also visited the orchid show at the Como Park conservatory, which is my favorite part of the Winter Carnival. This year there were vendors there selling orchids and I took home a phalenopsis that was in bloom. I’m crossing my fingers that it survives… I always feel super guilty when killing orchids, even when they’re not pricey or rare ones.

Not a whole lot is new on the crafty front… productivity is down due to grad school being in session. I just have one more chemo cap to finish before my set of 4 can be mailed to Mini. I’ve done some work on the Anastasia sock but I don’t want to post any more pictures of that until at least one sock is complete.

Completed project: roman shade

Posted in house, sewing at 11:10 pm by carriebee

I have finally, after 8 months, completed the second (and last) roman shade for our dining room. As mentioned before, I am really, really horrible about finishing projects. This project was especially bad because the construction of the first shade did not go smoothly. I bought the wrong amount of fabric so the construction of the second shade went even worse – I had to buy more fabric and piece it together to make the second shade. Ugh! I don’t think I will ever learn the measure twice, cut once rule. Somewhere between finishing the two shades I spent time scouring the web and every hardware/window treatment/craft store in town to find a cord anchor that 1)was small enough to fit in the window frame and 2)wasn’t plastic. I finally found them at The Brass Handle in Edina for something like $2.

Chemo caps

Posted in knitting at 2:43 pm by carriebee

Mini has organized a chemo cap drive for the Children’s Hospital in Boston. I think it is such a sweet thing to do! Visit her blog if you are interested in signing up. The hats are very simple to make. The pattern says it takes about an hour. I’m a slow knitter, it took me about 2.5 hours. Oh well, it was time well spent!! Here’s the first out of four:

Recipe: Pulled pork

Posted in recipe at 11:53 pm by carriebee

Slightly modified version of recipe found in this post at Coconut & Lime.

3 lb boneless pork shoulder roast (trim off excess fat)
1 cup Sriracha chili sauce
1 cup tomato puree
1/4 cup cider vinegar
1/8 cup spicy mustard
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon liquid smoke
3 tablespoons dark brown sugar
2 teaspoons black pepper
2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons barbecue dry rub
1/2 onion, finely chopped
2-6 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 tablespoon vegetable oil

Directions:

Rub barbecue spice rub on the pork. Marinate in the fridge for 2-12 hours. In a large skillet add the vegetable oil and brown the roast well on all sides. Place roast in slow cooker. In the same skillet and oil, saute onions until soft, about 10 minutes. Add garlic, cook 1-2 minutes until aromatic. Add all remaining ingredients to the skillet and bring to a boil. Pour over meat. Cook on low in the slow cooker 10-12 hours. When done, meat should shred easily with a fork. Remove roast from slow cooker. Shred with a fork. Return to slow cooker, stirring to coat with sauce. Serve on rolls.

Completed project: garlands

Posted in completed, sewing at 5:35 pm by carriebee

I finally got around to making some garlands after being inspired by the Ga-Ga for Garlands flickr group months ago. I made the Valentine’s one yesterday and it was so cute that I went on to make the St Paddy’s day one today. I’m supposed to be working on completing a cat tree and a roman shade today… but I figure I have the day off from work, I should be able to squander it however I want. Right?

Both garlands are just under 34 inches long with a few extra inches of bias tape on each end. They’ll fit a standard size window or door.

The garlands are super simple to make. I used 1/4 inch double-fold bias tape and the equilateral triangles – 18 of them for each garland – are cut from 4 inch strips of fabric (using the 60 degree line on my ruler). Just place 2 triangles right sides together and stitch 2 sides of the triangles using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Clip the points and turn right side out. Iron and then stay-stitch the triangles together, overlapping each triangle about 1/8 inch, along the the raw-edged side using a 1/8 inch seam allowance. Stitch the bias tape on and you’re done!

Completed project: baby hat II

I just finished knitting this baby hat for a relative’s brand new baby boy:

I used this great pattern. I substituted a knot on top for the curly-cue thing. The knot helps hide some of my boo-boos in those last few rounds of decreases.

Recipe: Margarita cupcakes

Posted in recipe at 11:28 pm by carriebee

I checked out the book Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World from my local library last week. I’m not a vegan (or even vegetarian) but the recipe for margarita cupcakes motivated me to give dairy-free baking a try. How could anything with tequila in it not be good?

The cupcakes came out of the oven all fluffy-looking and with domed tops. Some time during the cooling process they started to implode on themselves, domed tops falling until they were actually concave and the sides of the cupcakes pulling away from the pans. Ack!

I let the cupcakes cool completely (and shrink to almost half their fresh-out-of-the-oven size) before trying one. The flavor was excellent but the texture was off… very dense and wet. I mixed up the frosting, which was fabulous, and frosted the cakes. (Note: I did make the frosting using butter as I could not find non-hydrogenated margarine at the store. Next time I will use more powdered sugar to get a fluffier, less runny frosting.) The frosting disguised the concave-ness of the cupcakes, for which I am glad. The cupcakes did taste better the next day; it took a while for the full flavor to develop, which was alluded to in the recipe.

I put the cupcakes in a covered pyrex dish and left them out at room temperature. After 2 days some mysterious, sticky goo developed on the bottom of the dish. Where did it come from? What is it?!

Although tasty enough, the cupcakes fell short of my expectations. That could be very well be due to my own shortcomings as a baker… in the last 2 weeks I botched a coffee cake, peanut butter cupcakes and pancakes. However, I’m determined to bake a margarita cupcake that doesn’t implode or excrete sticky goo. Any recipe suggestions?

CardBoy

Posted in paper at 6:39 pm by carriebee

I just finished constructing a CardBoy. I found a link to the pattern on the always inspiring Rag & Bone blog. He is super cute, and not too hard to put together. The eye and date panels were a little tricky, be sure to use a super-sharp exacto knife to cut them out and think about using a tiny hole punch to get nice round corners. Enjoy :)

Update: Sewing DISASTER

Posted in sewing at 5:23 pm by carriebee

I figured out how to correctly adjust the tension while quilting with my Bernina 830 – the bobbin thread needs to be threaded through a hole in the arm of the bobbin casing to adjust the bottom tension. I tried this and it works much, MUCH better. So the problem was not with my sewing machine, but instead my lack of knowledge. I would still recommend getting a Bernina 830 over any other model of sewing machine. Happy sewing everybody!

WIP: Anastasia socks

Posted in knitting, wip at 11:00 pm by carriebee

Here’s one of the Anastasia socks after 3 episodes of the Sopranos. Some people measure time spent knitting in hours, I measure it in TV shows. You should notice that I didn’t get very far. Although it’s not a terribly complicated pattern it was apparently too complicated for me to get right the first three times I tried it. BUT I am now on row 16 of the pattern and things are looking good. Well, the pattern is looking good AND it is fitting, but I’m not so sure about the weird pooling/striping of the yarn. Oh well… I’m sure it will grow on me.
